About Us

About us

SHPE at Swarthmore is a community committed to supporting and uplifting Hispanic students in STEM. As part of a national organization founded in 1974, we aim to create a space where students can grow, connect, and succeed together. We are proud to be part of SHPE Region 4, representing the Northeast region of the United States and connecting with the chapters across the area.

Each year, our members attend the SHPE National Convention, held in a different city across the country, offering members opportunities to network, attend workshops, and connect with industry professionals.

From professional development and networking opportunities to social events and mentorship, our chapter helps build members’ confidence, explore career paths, and form lasting friendships and connections. We are dedicated to fostering leadership, celebrating culture, and empowering the next generation of engineers and scientists.

SHPE Organization

“In 1974, SHPE was officially incorporated, its first office listed as a post office box in Los Angeles. Rod Garcia served as the first president of the organization, which initially focused its efforts in Southern California. Administrators, professors, and students at California State University, East Los Angeles College, and the University of Southern California founded SHPE’s first collegiate chapters.”

SHPE Regions

Coinciding with its founding, SHPE implemented a regional structure across the United States. These regional sections were established to better support and connect its growing network of members and helping create a structure that fosters collaboration, leadership, and growing community at a more local level.

SHPE at Swarthmore

While SHPE has been around since 1974, the chapter at Swarthmore College was established by former students: Kevin Murillo (’24), Justin Gonzalez Cruz (’25), Bryan Rosario (’25), and Chisom Obiora (’25). Since then, SHPE at Swarthmore has played an important role in supporting and connecting Hispanic students in STEM, creating a space for growth, leadership, and community on campus.

2025 Philadelphia SHPE Convention

Last year, the National SHPE convention was hosted in our nearby city of Philadelphia, PA, bringing together members from across the country for a week of connection, growth, and opportunity.

Class of 2027

It was an inspiring experience. I got to meet so many others who share the same goals and aspirations and have a similar background to mine. I’m looking forward to the next convention.
