English translation:
If you get lost behind the mirror, your mother will drag you back.
Ribs turned into teeth,
ready to take a bite.
Meals approach
in pale hands,
brown eyes oozing familiarity,
ooze up prejudice instead.
In the mirror,
the girl sees health,
like the frog’s,
but her mother sings to her:
“Heal, heal, little frog’s tail.”
The nurses of white hands
stain themselves with optimism
designed for American lives.
Chicken without lemon,
nights without reggaeton,
wormseed alcohol replaced by little white pills.
Burgundy tears trickle
from the rag doll’s eyes.
The girl remains transformed,
without the taste of cinnamon from home.
The doctor cannot see what’s missing.
She doesn’t know how to press her eyes,
turn them over,
pull her tongue,
offer her fervid tastes of Spanish.
She recognizes the eyes are from the disorder
but not their nature within stripped treatment:
the cavity in connection between
mother, nurse, doctor.
They keep seeing mother as a frog
with antique,
maladaptive ideologies.
Her eyes sing with wisdom,
distinct, yet inked
with the same reasoning.
If you get lost behind the mirror, your mother will drag you back. ribs of fuller flesh,
enough muscle to react.
Together you will press their eyes,
turn them over,
pull their tongues,
give them fervid tastes of Spanish.
The fright your mother tried to draw out with wormseed alcohol will seep into their judgment,
into their eyes of glass,
turn them into cells of humanity,
appear like stained glass.
