Mental Health at Swarthmore

First-Generation students face many unique stressors when transitioning to college, and they can persist throughout their college years. Whether your mental health problems are pre-existing or new, Swarthmore offers some resources to help support you during your time here.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS is located inside the Worth Health Center,  directly to the left of the Benjamin West Parking Lot. While you are at Swarthmore, your student health insurance will cover appointments with counseling services. If you choose to seek medication, your student insurance will likely cover the majority of the costs. Depending on your medication you may pay less than~$5 for treatment. If your medication becomes too expensive, you may ask your provider to switch or change your treatment.

Students will be able to request appointments here beginning August 22, 2022. Office hours will resume on Tuesday, August 23, 2022.  You can read their FAQ here.

TalkSpace

Swarthmore College has partnered with Talkspace, where students can access licensed therapists through video, text, and voice messaging, and licensed psychiatrists through video.  Counselors offer support and guidance through talk therapy, and cannot prescribe medication. Psychiatrists and nurse practitioners are licensed medical providers who specialize in mental health treatment and can provide personalized medication management. Please note that Talkspace psychiatrists are unable to prescribe medication categorized as a Controlled Substance, such as stimulants and benzodiazepines.
